What's a Good Teacher?
A good teacher is the tour guide who points to students the
successful strategies and skills they need to perform to have a safe
trip. If not guided, students would not be able to work on their own especially
if they are young learners. To become autonomous, the teacher should teach her
students the skills and strategies they need to comprehend a text
independently, figure out the meanings of unfamiliar words, and use the
language effectively to convey the meanings they want whether in oral or
written communication. That way, students can learn how to become independent
learners and would be able to sail on their own without guidance in the future.
And during the journey, the teacher monitors the boat’s progress to
check whether the students are on the right track or have drifted away. Many
times, our lesson might go different than how we planned. Students might lose
interest or get distracted. Sometimes, they might misunderstand the information
presented or might find it difficult to grasp the new learning points because
of some gaps they have from previous academic years. Some teachers might keep
going and ignore the situation because they are overwhelmed with time
restrictions or simply because they don’t care. But a good teacher is the one
who keeps an eye on every student, reads their expressions and body language, provides
them with a comfortable environment to encourage them to express their feelings
of confusion and dismay, and aims to convey meaningful learning to all
students with no exceptions.
